I gained a lot from this book. This book explains in great detail the techniques on one side while providing great inspiration from photos on the other hand.

Though the book was written in the Film Era the techniques elucidated are still very relevant for the Digital Era.

Whether the technique uses teleconverters, stacking lenses, reversing lenses, using diopters, extension tubes or simply different types of lenses, John Shaw has covered it all in this book.

A MUST BUY for a serious student of Close-Up and Moderately High magnification photography.

Very highly recommended.

This book should be taken out of print. It is unbelievably outdated and the creative viewpoint of the author is stale at best. I have an art degree and Shaw comes up lacking in composition, depth of field, backgrounds and subject positioning. His "home-made" equipment was a laugh and does not translate well to what is inexpensively available for modern cameras. Most of the photographs were average at best. I would not even recommend this to a beginner. In the same purchase, I received two of Tom Ang's books. Both of these are excellent, have strong creative suggestions and current information for the digital camera age. Look elsewhere for a photography book.

This book really helped me develop some interesting concepts to adapt into my own work, and it introduced me to many things that you can do with lenses to take more interesting photographs.

Yeah, it's film centric but much of the information is great for digital too. If you are a wannabee, hobbiest nature photographer like myself, this is a great read.

All of John Shaw's books are great. There is some overlap between them as he goes over the basics but they are all worth a read for any aspiring nature photographer.

This is a great book for all photographers. Even those just a little interested in close up photography. Recommended 4++++
