Great Value & Great performance I got this battery pack in a package with my Canon 580EX II flash. I've used it a few times and I love it. It works great and I can shoot a 10 hour wedding and still have battery left. The only thing I wish was different is that the plugin was designed so that the cord pointed toward the back of the camera and not the front. It can get in the way at times. But otherwise it is great, and it may be different now that I have a larger camera (I was shooting with a rebel.. just got the 7D today). I always leave it in the case and then put the strap of my camera bag (I use the Lowepro Inverse 200 AW Beltpack... another awesome piece of equipment) through the loop of the pack and it stays out of the way and makes my camera that much lighter. A must have for anyone shooting more than a few hours at a time!
A must have I purchased two of these - one for my 5D and one for my 7D. We shot an entire wedding with it - using fill flash during the day and flash at the evening ceremony and reception. We started at 9am and changed batteries only after the 6pm ceremony. We used the lithium batteries which were lighter and lasted longer. Great deal on these. Since I've only used them once, this is the review. I'll check back in a year or so to write another.
Opteka External Flash Battery Pack for Canon 580EX, The Opteka External Flash Battery Pack for Canon 580EX worked great I shot a function and took over 350 flashes.
Broke, difficult to diagnose with multi-meter This unit broke after a few uses and was difficult to diagnose with multi-meter.
I wouldn't bother with it. Save up for the canon pack or a fancier third-party unit.
I probably got a dud I probably got one that was no good. I read the prior reviews but still decided to trust my luck and got burnt.
I could not find a way to rate it '0' So I rate it one star by default.
I followed the instructions (which could have been a bit more explicit).
Alas, after many tries my unit did not work at all.
No pilot light. No warmth to suggest it was charging, no sound, No power in my 580EXII.
I found the Opteka site and sent off a mail asking for some assistance, but to no avail.
Sadly the time has passed and I can't return the item, and really I have lost interest and faith in the product. I have put this one down to experience.
There are others who have units that work, so I assume I got a dud.
I would not buy this product again nor recommend it.
By the way I have bought other Opteka products that work well.
